925,000 deaths in the United States each year. That is more than the combined total resulting from cancer, accidents, tuberculosis, diabetes, pneumonia, ,and all other diseases and causes of death. In fact, these cardiovascular diseases account for over 54 percent of all deaths. The heart problem is no distant abstraction. Although national and International in scope, it exists as a painful and costly reality right here in this county. You’ll find that our local mortality experience closely parallels national figures; that on the average, about half our death notices will mention “heart attack," “stroke* or “heart disease”. All too often these terms are applied to family breadwinners in the prime of life — men in the 45 - to 65-year age bracket. There is only one practical way to fight the heart diseases, namely, by supporting your Heart Association's balanced programs of research, education and community service. You can do this by contributing volunteer service or Heart Fund dollars. Truly, the Heart Fund deserves a place at the very top of your “giving for health* list.

STATISTIC- During 1962, a driver known to have been drinking was involved in 32.2 percent of all fatal crashes. In December, the comparable percentage was 39.4. Both percentages are most conservative since all facts are not known in all cases.

National Picture Through October, the nation's 1963 traffic deaths stood at 33,170 as against 33,420 for the corresponding period of 1962. Undoubtedly, the 40,900 deaths of 1962, an all-time high, will be considerably exceeded when all 1963 reports are in.
