learning - books. School* seemed to be the library site in most northern States. However they were primarily foi the use of adults. It was noi until 1835 that the Legislature of any State legalized a Library - this was New York, Massachusetts was the first tc provide tax support when 1) authorized $5,000.00 for the Boston Library, this was 1848. From then on the idea of ta> support to public libraries spread over the Country, There is more to this story of library beginnings which we may return to in a later issue. For now let us appreciate the wealth of books available to us without cost through our free public libraries. Let us not fall into the error that because they are available we can await another day. Yes, the books will be there, but will we?

Miss Judy Lillard left Tuesday to enroll for the spring semester at Ferrum Junior College. She was accompanied to Ferrum by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carson Lillard and sister, Miss Jean Lillard Edger (Butch) Browning returned Tuesday to the University of Virginia after spend ing the semester break with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John S. Browning. Mrs. W. J. Kendrick of Roanoke was an over-night guest ,last Monday of her sisterin-law, Mrs. Frank Spalding and Mr. Spalding. Mrs. Kendrick and Mrs. Spalding spent Tbesday visiting in Fairfax, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wince and four children were Sunday visitors of Mrs. Dennis Corbir Mr. and Mrs. Lyde Dearing moved last week into the house formerly occupied by Mrs. T, Abbott Ritchie. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Howel] and two children Karen anc Denise and Louie Miller oi Madison Heights were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Miller. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Foster were Sunday visitors of Mr and Mrs. Allie Howell in Luray and Sunday supper guests ol Mr. and Mrs. Gavor Fostei and son Chris. M. R. Bradford, III was home from V. P. L for the weekend visiting his parents, Mr, and Mrs. M. R. Bradford, Jr, Sunday dinner guests of Mrs, Thelma Russell were Mr. anc Mrs. Ray*.Wood of Front Roys: and John Kemp of Arlington, J. G.
