In Front Royal

Quarter Horse Week will be celebrated in Front Royal beginning February 24th. The announcement was made last night by Paul Hockman,President of the Chamber of Commerce of Front Royal and Warren County, and Lamarr Bishop, Lexington, President of the Virginia State Quarter Horse Association, Inc. Highlights of the week will include a banquet.sponsored by the Quarter Horse Association, at the Hy-Wy Restaurant on February 28. Front Royal buslnessmen,un> der the direction of the Chamber of Commerce, are donating a registered Quarter Horse colt to be given away at the end of the special Quarter Horse sale at the Front Royal Livestock Market. The Virginia State Quarter Horse Association, Inc. will sponsor its first Quarter Horse auction at the Front Royal Livestock Market on Feb. 29th. The Chamber of Commerce is hoping this special Quarter Horse Auction will become an annual affair for Front Royal, The Association has 110 active members in Virginia, according to Mr. Bishop, who will direct the week’s activities. The Quarter Horse originated in Virginia and went West with the early settlers. These horses were a great factor in building the West as we know it today, Mr. Bishop said. The Quarter Horse is re turning to Virginia, its place of origin. Mr. Bishop explained that the name. Quarter Horse, was derived from the fact that the horsemen in Colonial days did not have a more suitable distance than a quarter of a mile to race their horses, thus their horses were bred for quarter mile racing.
