There are not enough samples in the last three kinds of hay to draw any conclusions. All tests do show there is little spread in the amount of TDN no matter the kind. Take the ears off and there would be little differences in TDN of corn silages. Note the percent spread between high and low in protein. These differences aren't necessarily expected to remain the same, however, they did exist as shown.
Just so no one will accuse me of using the extreme of the extremes, I’ll holdfurther comment to the differences in Alfalfa-Orchard grass. Here the low contained 8.0% protein.
the high 11.7%; there wasn’t much difference in the amounts of grass or Alfalfa. A ton of one hay contains 160 lbs. digestible protein, the other 234 lbs. digestible protein. Whats the difference in value per ton on a protein basis. With 41% cottonseed meal (34% digestible) quoted at $4.65 per hundred this figures 13.7(5 per pound of digestible protein; therefore a difference of $10.14 per ton in these two hays!
If you rather, you can compare the two samples as regards the amounts needed to satisfy the daily protein needs of a 1100 pound dry beef cow. This cow should have eight tenths of a pound of digestible protein before calving, 1.3 pounds after calving."
