Being Planted
A future crop of timber being set out with the aid of a mechanical tree planter. Under the older hand method, two men after a Iona, hard day may plant from 1,500 to 2,000 seed lings. This machine is pulled by a farm tractor, and two men (one riding the machine and one driving the tractor) may plant from 7,000 to 9,000 seedlings in one day. The Virginia Division of Forestry has a limited supply of these machines, which for a nominal fee are used by tree farmers to plant abandoned fields. The conversion of idle land to tree farms is a big business. Last year Virginians planted more than 30 million tree seedlings and even more may be plant ed this spring.
