On the basis of deaths per 100 million miles of travel (mileage death rate), Charles City, with five killed and a rate of 28.2, had the worst record while Floyd, with eight killed and a rate of 21.5, was second worst. Of the three counties experiencing no deaths, > Prince Edward was accorded the best record, since more travel was experienced there than in the other deathless counties. Greatest increases were shown by Albemarle (13-28), Fairfax (36-51), Fauquier (919) and Franklin (6-16). Notable decreases occurred in Nansemond (24-9), Mecklenburg (20-7), Pittsylvania (28— 15) and Chesterfield (29-18).
For cities with populations above 50,000, Portsmouth had the best record with two deaths and a rate, based on deaths per 100,000 population, of 1.7. (Editor: Mileage death rate is computed from gas tax receipts. This is impractical in cities.) Worst was Virginia Beach with 36 deaths and a population death rate of 41.3. Decreases were noted by Lynchburg (12-5), Portsmouth (9-2) and Richmond (29-20.
