Highway users in Virginia paid a total of $115,884,OOCX in Federal automotive taxes during 19^3, John J. Wickstead, General Manager of the Automobile Club of Virginia, reports.
These payments result from such Federal taxes as 4(5 per gallon on gasoline, 10 per cent on new cars, buses and trucks 8 per cent on parts and accessories, 10(5 a pound on tires and tubes and other assorted excises, Mr. Wickstead pointed out. “For the nation as a whole. Federal automotive tax collections in 1963 hit the alltime high total of $5,245 billion,* the AAA official reported. “According to official U. S. Bureau of Public Roads figures, approximately $3 1/4 billion of this went to the Highway Trust Fund ■which supports the Federal-aid program, while about $2 billion was diverted to the general funds of the U.
