Cowpasture Float
The gin clear water of the Cowpasture River looked fishy and inviting and the Bath Court ty Alleghenies still hid the early morning sun as we slipped my aluminum car topper into the water. The river was also very low. This meant we would have dtf ficulty navigating the rapids. Seated midship the 12 feet craft and handling one of the paddles was my brother Jack Perched in the bow was his son Steve, 11 years old and a : Little Leaguer. I was holding down the-stern and we were all equipped with light'spinning outfits.
Private Property For the most part the Cowpasture flows through private property and this makes it hard to arrange a lengthy float trip. The stretch we had permission to fish was not long but if we covered it thoroughly we figured it could consume about 4 hours of fishing time. My wife had agreed to meet us at the proper time at a designat ed point downstream.
Smallmouth Basa Moody As we drifted slowly through the deep pools of clean mountain water, we satisfied ourselves that there were bass in the river—and some good ' ones. But bass are moody fishpar ticularly in July when they seem to feed mostly at night. Occasionally we would spot one chasing a school of minnows, but for the most part they simply finned slowly away i as our boat drifted over them. None of our proven lures or methods seemedto Interest them.
Rock Basa Cooperate It didn’t take us long to get into action though. The scrappy little rock bass saw to that. Jack netted the first one, a scrappy 8 incher that hit his yellow Flatfish. I soon had one 6n and then Steve got into the act with a plump sunfish. They h i t our regular bass lures so we did not have to forsake our smallmouth fishing.
