Governor Harrison has de-j dared Virginia’s woodlands in a state of “extraordinary fire hazard" and closed them effective noon Tuesday until further notice. The closing affects that portion of the Commonwealth east of the Blue Ridge. All persons except residents and those employed in the areas will be barred from them. Hunting and fishing will be barred as well as all fires and smoking within 300 yards of any woods. The closing covers all land eastward from the western boundaries of the counties of Loudoun, Fauquier, Rappaharv nock, Madison, Greene, Albemarle, Bedford, Nelson, Amherst, Franklin and Patrick. The governor said he was acting with great reluctance and had waited as long as possible before taking this action.
