To Rabies Outbreak
Because of the recent outbreak of rabies in foxes in this area, Dr. L. O. Fears, Director of the Rappahannock County Health Department, would like to altert the residents to avoid contact with any animal that is behaving in an unusual or unnatural manner. Cattle are particularly susceptible to the disease and may react in either of two ways. They may become nervour, restless, aggressive, paw the ground and butt other animals or they may appear sick and develop paralysis of the jaw and throat and soon the leg muscles. These animals are not usually vicious but persons may become infect ed by trying to look down the throat of the animal or give him medicine. Horses and mules usually become very vicious, paw the ground and even tear off bits of their own flesh. Please contact your veterinarian and do not attempt to treat animals with any of these symptoms! Whenever a fox loses its natural fear of dogs and man, it should be strongly suspect ed of having rabies. All animal bites should be immediately and thoroughly washed with soap and water and then consult your physi clan for further advice. Do not kill the biting animal un less necessary because in the early stage of rabies the brain
examination may not show evij dence of disease. Capture the; biting animal and confine him to a pen for one week. If it remains well during this period the animal was not rabid at time of biting. If it is necessary to kill animal, try to avoid injury to brain. If biting animal disappears, consult your physician for advice as to treatment. If pets or livestock are bitten, contact your veterinarian.
