Clean-up Week Here
The Town of Washington is going into the last three days of the annual Paint-up, Fix-up, Cleanup Week which ends this Saturday the 23rd. The aim of this spruce-up campaign is to have the community at it's best for the many visitors driving through during Virginia's historic Garden Week. Residents have been busy cleaning and making general Improvements throughout the area. The action of the Town Council to put teeth in the enforcement of fining owners of abandoned and wrecked cars that are left on streets and in alleys has met with good support from interested citizens and some response of removal by offenders. It is hoped that all these cars will be removed by the end of the Clean-up campaign and will make further action by the Council unnecessary. Planting Day for dogwood and redbud has been set for Friday the 22nd (tomorrow) and Councilwomen Edna Wayland has had requests for a dozen redbud and a dozen and a half dogwood. The FFA boys under the direction of their sponsor F. S. Boze will be digging the dogwood and redbud today. Dogwood planted in former years under this beautification program are now making a nice showing throughout the community. There have been several complaints that they received non bloomers, these should be replaced with a bloomer now. Saturday is trash collection day to take away the yearly accumulation gathered during clean-up week. This is in addition to the regular monthly collection on the first Saturday in each month. Paper and garbage will not be accepted as the policy is not to collect anything that can be disposed of by burning for hauling to the dump.
