Alertness in Winter
•Weatherlze Yourself for the Winter,* says AAA. “Will this be the winter of your discontent?* asks AAA. To guard against such an eventuality and to get you through the approaching bad weather season unscathed, AAA urges you to weatherlze yourself by being extra alert when walking or driving in traffic. John J. wickstead, Manager of the Automobile Club of Virginia, said that the Club has supplied area elementary and Junior high schools with copies of this month's Grand Award winning traffic safety poster, “Be Extra Alert in Bad Weather,* by Dawn DuShane, age .15, of Tyrone Junior High School, St. Petersburg, Fla., as part of its monthly contribution to area schools' traffic safety education programs. •The advent of bad weather in most parts of the country brings with it a rash of traffic accidents and the greatest num ber of traffic deaths,* noted the AAA official. “Thus,* he said, "alertness is essential for both motorists and pedestrians. Bad weather reduces visibility and lessens both the driver's and the pedestrian’s control of their movements. Such hazardous conditions require motorists and pedestrians to move s lowly and cautiously.*
AAA is also asking parents to help weatherize their children by dressing them properly in bright well-fitting cloth ing; getting them off to school early enough to allow extra time to be especially careful; and avoiding the use of umbrellas, which can obstruct vision and be a very dangerous weapon; and not to add to the usual congested and hazardous conditions around the schools by driving children to schotol. Rain or snow makes this parental practice doubly hazardous for children and drivers.
