Lorenzo de’Medici, patron of the arts and ruler of Florence, was born Jan. 1, 1735, his birthday, and Revolutionary hero "Mad Anthony" Wayne was born on the same date 10 years later. And though it may be unchival rous to mention a lady’s age, flagmaker Betsy Ross came into the world Jan. 1, 1752. There are plenty of other reasons fqr celebration. Haiti proclaimed its independence from France Jan. 1, 1804 Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation Jan. 1, 1863. The Commonwealth of Australia was proclaimed Jan. 1, 1901. And the United States parcel post service began Jan. 1, 1913. But don’t let your party last long; not more than a week or two. It was on Jan. 16,1919, that the 18th amendment to the Con stitution was ratified. That’s the amendment that prohibited the sale of alcoholic beverages.
