Trout Stocked

In Reservoirs

Annual trout stocking in Virginia reservoirs is slated to begin during December and continue into January, according to Game Commission Fish Division Chief R. G. Martin. Philpottand Carvins Cove Reservoirs, consistent producers of nice rainbows under this program are scheduled to receive 23,000 and 3,200, respectively, of the advanced fingerlings. Smith Mountain, which received its initial trout introduction last year is to be stocked with 30,000 additional rainbqws. Many rainbows up to 17 inches long were taken from Smith Mountain this summer and fall. Ten thousand of the trout fingerlings are scheduled to go into South Holston Reservoir as part of a cooperative stocking project with the Tennessee Game and Fish Commission. Newly constructed J. W. Flanagan and Pound Reservoirs are scheduled to get their initial stocking of 6,000 and 140 rainbows respectively. Fishery biologists view these new waters as potentially good producers. Other waters to receive trout are G a t e w o od Reservoir, where 1,6\)0 will be introduced and Scott-Wise Lake which will receive 500. The Commission’s reservoir trout stocking program has paid off handsomely during the past few years. The fingerlings are taken from the hatcheries at a time when additional space is needed to make room for growth of the trout which will be stocked in the spring a s catchables. The fingerlings about double their size in the lakes before the next angling season and a few survive to become real lunkers. Jack Hoffman, Fisheries Management Field Coor dinator, says "Some anglers fish in these lakes and never catch a trout, but those that know how consistently make nice catches including many limits.*
