Speaking for the proposal were members of conservation groups as The Wilderness Society, the Potomac Ap palachian Trail Club, Canoe Cruisers Association, Virginia Wildlife Association, and Isaac Walton League. They gave oral testimony and submitted copies of remarks fori official records. In addition to supporting the present pro| posal, these groups felt the' wilderness designation should be extended to cover 91,000 acres of the Park. Conservationists also pointed out that water impoundments could not be legally built within any National Park irrespective of; wilderness designation. The hearing record will re main open until July 14, 1967j for those who wish to submit' written comments on the pro posal.
