widespread this spring. Most likely the problem is Sycamore anthracnose, a disease of leaves and twigs caused by the fungus Gnomonia veneta.
Severe spring attack by this disease often kills the very young leaves and may result in complete defoliation. The disease is often confused with frost damage, since it often occurs just after the leaves come out. Affected trees normally produce a second crop of leaves within 2 weeks to 1 month. Damage may still be considerable because of the trees being weakened or mishapened due to repeated defoliation in successive years.
Three applications of bordeaux mixture or organic met cury sprays will control anthracnose. The first spray should be applied before the buds unfold, the second just after they unfold, and the third when the lea ves are half grown. Although it is too late to use these materials at this time, the above information is offered for those who may want to control the disease in future years particularly on young Sycamore shade trees. Caution: If you use Bordeaux make sure it is fresh, ALWAYS read and follow the directions on the container of any insecticide or fungicide. These chemicals to be effective are poisonous and their labels are the manufacturer’s prescriptions on how they should be handled, hollow them in every detail.
