•Shawnee Springs is the first nursing home in our six-county service area to be certified as an Extended Care Facility, and we are happy that our Senior Citizens can now avail themselves of this service,* Mrs. Daly stated. *An extended care facility is a nursing home which provides skilled nursing care and related services, or rehabilitation services, for injured, sick, or disabled persons. The institution must meet the highest quality standards and must be in compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.* The Medicare program will help pay for covered services received in a participating nursing home for up to 100 days in each spell of illness. This program pays the full cost of such services for the first 20 days. After that — for up to 80 additional days — Medicare pays all but $5.00 a day of covered services. In order to- become entitled to such benefits, the patient must have been hospitalizedatleast three days; he must be admitted to the nursing home within 14 days after discharge from the hospital; his doctor must have prescribed this kind of special care to continue treatment of the illness for which the patient washosDrive
