Thomas Menefee Utz of jCastleton has been named outstanding Conservation Farmer of the Year in Rappahannock County. He was recognized and received this award at the annual awards dinner sponsored by the Culpeper Soil Conservation District which was held Tuesday night at Graves Lodge, Syria.

Among the conservation practices cited in use on the Utz farm were 75 acres of improved pasture, 50 acres of crop land, 75 acres of woodland, 25 acres of contour strip cropping, drainage and open ditching and stream channel improvement. All crop land is managed in a three-year rotation and the farm is self-sufficient to provide for his beef herd.

The Utz farm has been a family project since Mr. Utz has always been employed at a full time job off the farm. \ son, now in service, was outstanding in F.F.A.

Tbe award was presented Mr. and Mrs. Utz by James R. Hale of Madison in the absence of W. H. Lyne, Extension Agent Agriculture, who usually does this.
