It has been said, the Golden Rule of Hawaiian life has been hospitality. It is that yet as far as our group could detect. The drivers of our coaches and all Hawaiians did everything possible to make our trip pleasurable. The drivers gave us easy name to remember - one called himself “Uncle John” or “Big John.” Our driver for all tours around Honolulu himself “Cousin David I” He was a real Hawaiian. He was educated and cultured. As they drove, they gave us history, jokes, and songs and had us joining in the singing. Each driver had different names for our rest stops. We liked “Cousin Davis” the best - it was “sandboxes.”
Our food in Hawaii was just beyond our expectations. The fruit was so delicious and plentiful.
I spoke of poi. This is made from the Taro Plant which is grown in the wet like rice is grown. This is edible only when cooked. It is to us like library paste.
Sugar cane and pineapple are the biggest crops. We drove through a sugar cane plantation and on this road was the only traffic light on all of our tours and it belonged to the Sugar Cane Company. Pineapples grow from plants in the ground not from trees. Papayas grow from trees. Macadamia Orchards furnish the most delicious but expensive nuts.
