“Birdie for Blind”
Golf Tourney
The first annual “Biuiie for the Blind” Golf Tournament was held Saturday, May 10 at South Wales Golf Course under the sponsorship of the Rappahannock Lions Club. Thirty-six Lions from nine Northern Virginia clubs competed for team and individual honors.
The Purcellville Lions Club won the Rotating Trophy for team honors. A. D. Bogle of that club was awarded the Low Gross Trophy with a score of 73.
Winners of a dozen golf balls were: A. D. Bogle, Purcellville, closest to pin on 17th hole; Bob Hall, Purcellville, closest to pin on 5th hole; Dick Barrett, Herndon, longest drive, 9th hole; Sherwood Boze, Rappahannock, longest drive on 14th hole.
The sponsoring club, Rappahannock, is sending a dollar for each birdie scored in the tournament to the Old Dominion Eye Bank in Richmond.
Trophies for the tournament were provided by Rappahannock National Bank, Washington and Citizens National Bank, Flint Hill. Golf balls were donated by the following individuals in the real estate business: T. J. Pillar, Luther B. Stuart, J. Newbill Miller, Mrs. Joyce DeBergh, Mrs. Virginia Miller, W. Arthur Miller, Ray T. Cannon and Edward Harris.
Sherwood Boze was chairman of the event and James W. Coates [was co-chairman.
