What a Marine Gives
Take a man, put him alone. Put him 12,000 miles from home. Empty his heart of all but blood, Make him live on sweat and mud.
This is the life we have to live. Why must I my soul to Satan give? You peace boys don’t know, What it’s like over here.
All you want to do is ban the bomb, Saying there’s no real war in Vietnam. You bum your draft cards and march at dawn, And plant your signs on the White House lawn.
You have fun without even trying, While over here guys are dying. Well, take your drugs, and have your fun. And then refuse to lift a gun.
There’s nothing here for you to do And I’m supposed to die for you I’ll hate you til the day I die, You made me hear my buddy cry.
I saw him over a bloody shed I heard them say, “This one’s dead.” It’s quite a price he had to pay Not to live another day.
But he had the guts to fight and die, He paid the price; what did he buy? He bought you life by giving his But who gives a damn what a Marine gives?
