“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” (Gen. 1:1)

This is one of the most wonderful verses in all of the Bible. It gives us a foundation for every Scriptural truth. Before the waves ever beat upon the shores or the wind ever rustled the autumn leaves or the birds ever chimed their beautiful songs, God was there. The Bible begins with God -- and teaches that He is the source of all things. It is assumed that rational creatures would understand that all things must have a Maker.

This truth refutes erroneous views. For example, God is separate from His creation in the same way as a man is separate from a house that he builds. This is the answer to Pantheism, the view that God is to be equated with nature. And materialism is done away with in that the material universe was created or brought forth by a creative act.
