Numerous traffic crashes have plagued Rappahannock County in the past few days including one Saturday night in which a prominent local resident died, apparently of a heart attack.
Robert F. Estes of Sperryville was pronounced dead on arrival at Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal following a single-vehicle crash on Route 211 east of Washington. Mr. Estes, operating a 1966 Chevrolet, ran off the right of the road, up an embankment and struck a utility pole, according to Trooper P.P. Dicks. The Rappahannock Rescue Squad responded to the crash which occurred about 11 p.m.
Physical evidence at the crash scene indicated that Mr. Estes either suffered a heart attack or fell asleep, said the investigating officer. He had been hospitalized in recent months with a severe heart condition. An autopsy was performed, but results have not been released. See obituary inside.
A dual collision occurred Friday night in front of the local high school on Route 211, three miles west of Washington. As Warren Lee Smith of Sperryville, in a 1962 Buick convertible, pulled into the highway from the school driveway, he was struck by a 61 Ford convertible which failed to stop. Apprehended later and charged with reckless driving and hit and run was Randolph Willoughby Starks of Woodville. The second phase of the collision occurred when Randall Junior Alther of Sperryville operating a 1960 Chevrolet ’ sideswiped the front of the already damaged Smith car which reclined on the right shoulder of the road. He then crossed into the left lane of the highway and struck a 57 Imperial operated by Francis Hogan of Washington, Va.
Two passengers in the Althei car, Larry Richard Long, 13, and Ronnie Atkins, 15, both of Sperryville, sustained lacerations and contusions of the head. They were taken to Culpeper Memorial Hospital by the Rappahannock Rescue Squad where they were treated and released.
Initial damage to the Smith cai was estimated at $250 and ar additional estimate of $50 was made after it was struck the second time. Starks damage was set at $300. Estimate of damage to the Alther car was $500 and $600 to the Hogan Imperial.
Alther was charged witt reckless driving. These Friday night crashes were investigated by Trooper W.A. Buntin.
