Here is a brief on the area state graded feeder calf sales. Source of information: two of my former 4-H Club members, Pete Lohr, Virginia Market News Service and Randall Updike, Virginia Division of Markets and Marketing. Also, last year’s files and a thoroughly chewed up pencil. I claim all credit for any errors in arithmetic or mistaken interpretation of market trends.
Starting with the Orange Sale on September 23rd buyer demand has firmed and throughout the week there has been a gradual but steady increase in prices received. The same average 500 pound steer that sold for $152 per head last year is bringing about $170 per head this year. Few pens of light steers have been topping the sales around $38 per cwt.
