Purple Heart
Army Sergeant Ronald L. Pullen, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Pullen of Sperryville has received the Purple Heart during ceremonies near Due Pho, Vietnam.
Sgt. Pullen was presented the award for wounds suffered in action against hostile forces in Vietnam.
An indirect fire squad leader in Company C, 4 th Battalion of the Americal Division’s 21st Infantry, the sergeant entered the Army in February, 1968, completed basic training at Ft. Jackson, S.C., and arrived in Vietnam last December. He also holds the Combat Infantryman Badge.
Sgt. Pullen is a 1966 graduate of Rappahannock County High School. Before entering the Army he was employed by the Virginia Department of Highways in Culpeper.
Ground Broken for Community College
A ground-breaking ceremony was held in Middletown, Va. Saturday for the Region 15 Community College scheduled for completion in 1970. The college will serve Rappahannock, Fauquier, Clarke, Frederick, Page, Shenandoah counties and the city of Winchester. Officiating at the ground-breaking ceremonies were Wilkie W. Hunt, Dr. William McCoy and Dr. Dana Ham ill. Dr. McCoy has been named president of the Region 15 college. In his remarks, he said, “Let us then break this ground with humility so that hope shall continue for the young; so that the older will sense some renewal and so that all of us may be more secure in the knowledge that the opportunity to improve ourselves and our society still exists.” This college, like other community, colleges already in existence, will make it possible for many to live at home and obtain a higher education which becomes more necessary each year.
