Editor The Rappahannock News Dear Sir:
We as Virginians have a right to be proud of our heritage ol religious liberty. Because of the courageous leadership oi clergymen such as John Leland, James Ireland and Samuel Davies, and the farsighted political leadership of James Madison, Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson, the concept of Separation of Church and State found its way into the United States Constitution.
Thomas Jefferson said in 1786 in Virginia, “The holy author of our religion, who being Lord both of body and mind, yet chose not to propagate it by coercions on either, as was in his Almighty power to do...To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagations of opinions which he disbelieves, is sinful and tyrannical.’’ We stand a good chance of losing this magnificant heritage because of Senate Joint Resolution number 25, which may soon become an Amendment to the Constitution of Virginia. It is printed below: “Except, first that the General Assembly may, and local governing bodies, subject to such limitations as may be imposed by the General Assembly, may appropriate funds for educational purposes which may be expended in furtherance of elementary,
