birdwatchers among my readers. I did recognize the ostriches and secretary birds on the plains. At Lake Nakuru in the Rift, west of Nairobi, is a beautifully shaped lake of good size, surrounded by barren mountains, with a pink haze around the shoreline. This haze turns out to be thousands upon thousands of flamingos, standing eyeball to eyeball, two or three yarda Into the lake, the whole way around. Since they seem to be spending most of their time fishing and standing In one place, it Is easy to Imagine the accompanying stench. If you can hold your nose, It is a most glorious sight.
Although I had read and been told much about Kenya’s big game, I was simply not prepared for the unbelievable numbers of them, the many different species, and the fact that it is difficult to go anywhere, except in the center of Nairobi, without coming upon some of them.
