The government restricts (hooting of the animals, since they are a source of the tourist dollar in a country that desperately needs foreign exchange. (Last year the touristbusiness brought in fifty million dollars, quite a contrast to the average annual per capita income of 125 dollars. Even though hunting is restricted, there is a great deal of poaching. The leopard has almost been wiped out in the fast few years, because of the fashionable leopard coats, hats, and purses in the western world.
Kenya, along with every other developing country, is doing its best to catch up with the mid-twentieth century. Education, health, industry are ail fields the government, with the help of the United States and other advanced nations, is trying to make progress in. As we know well, progress brings disadvantages too. So I would suggest that if it interest you to see an environment practically untouched by modern civilization, that you plan your safari soon. Kenya won’t stay the way it is for long.
