Kenya has many game “preserve*", but there is little fencing. The game park right outride Nairobi has fencing on three rides, but on the fourth, the animals are free to go out to the plains, and come back. It is delightful to be going along a rough road in the Rift, for example, and have a herd of giraffes munching thorn trees right next to you, then crossing the road in front of your car for a delectable tidbit of thorns on the other side. We saw many elephants, in small groups, and Uganda, near Murchison Falls, there were great herds, not a quarter of a mile from the “toad”. There ate many of the deer family, including the dik-dik, the eland, and the impala. We also saw water buffalo, wildebeste, and warthog, some of which I would have been, just as happy not to see. The Victoria Nile, below Murchison Falls in Uganda, was absolutely saturated with hippopotami and crocodiles, and I intend to skin their kinfolk in
