Even though the weather remains cool, Winter’s spell was broken for many when they took to Virginia trout streams this past Saturday. An estimated 1,000 hopeful anglers, give or take a few, lined Rappahannock streams at noon. Pishing was good if not excellent as most people took a few fish and many had their limit. If participation and anticipation can be counted, the opening day was a great success. Late afternoon Saturday and Sunday fishermen found the remaining trout pretty wary of all those worms, salmon eggs, and other such matter wrapped around a sharp, barbed hook.
Hopefully opening day was made more pleasant by the clean up job the Sperryville Boy Scouts did a week before the season opened on the N.F. Thornton and Piney branch. These boys, working on a project sponsored annually by the Rappahannock County Jaycees, did a grand job. From myself and 1 feel safe in saying from the majority of landowners and fishermen using these streams, many thanks to the Scouts, Jaycees and all those who contributed to this project.
