Among their 'uests were Mr. and Mrs. W. L. ’ayne and son William and Mr. md Mrs. John H. Williams and :hildren Betsy and John Henry of Amissville. The program, presented by the United States Army, featured the 1st Battalion (REINF), 3rd Infantry (The Old Guard) and the United States Army Band and Uhorus. It included pageantry, military skills and precision drills. This program is the annual salute of the United States Army to the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Of special interest was the performance of the Army Drill Team under black lights.

Blacksburg-Springtime is the time of the year when all the countryside turns from gray to green, except when uncontrolled forest fires turn it black.
“It’s in the springtime that the forest fire hazard is particularly high,” said extension forest management specialist C. E. Gill at Virginia Tech. “Of course, everyone should be careful with fire all of the time. But they should exercise a little extra caution at this time of the year, ” he added.
A few forest fires in Virginia are started by lightning or from some reason like a downed electric fence wire. But, by far, the majority of forest fires in Virginia are set off by some of the things Virginians do. Camp fires, rubbish fires and others, which should be doused, are left burning and unattended. Matches and cigarettes, still burning, are carelessly cast aside.
Some fires occur as a result of a violation of the state’s Brush Burning Law. It requires that between March 1 and May 15 all burning be done between 4 p.m. and midnight. Virginia winds,.

The Brush Burning Law applies to any type of open fire within 300 feet of woodland, brushland or any material capable of carrying the fire to a woodland or brushland.
Gill advised, “If there is doubt concerning the legality of a fire one intends to start, the chief forest warden of the county should be consulted. He will be glad to discuss the problem and will make suggestions concerning burning operations.”
