Changes Proposed
Only moderate changes in the fall hunting slate were proposed by the Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries following their annual public hearing on game and fish regulations in Richmond, March 20, reports Executive Director Chester F. Phelps. Some of the proposed changes involving the deer season would Include the opening of two closed counties and a two day doe season for east Piedmont and central Tidewater counties. Buchanan and Northampton Counties, where deer hunting has previously been prohibited, would be opened in the fall. Counties where doe shooting would be permitted on the last two days included Buckingham, Fluvanna, Louisa, Goochland, Cumberland, Powhatan, Amelia, Nottoway, Hanover, Henrico, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Brunswick, New Kent, Prince George, Charles City, James City, and York, plus the Nties of Hampton and Newport News. Louisa County’s season bag imit would be increased from jne to two deer. Southern Dickenson County would be idded to the closed section of idjoining Wise County to protect leer being stocked in that area. Small game season changes were minor, the mo6t significant ieing a proposal to repeal the prohibition against hunting quail m the snow. The impossibility of iefining “snow” in anything but subjective terms prompted the nove. King William’s January 31 Nosing date on quail was dropped in the new proposal, allowing that season to end February 15 as it loes in surrounding counties. No changes were proposed for the fall turkey season in 1970, but a major change to a 3 turkey season bag limit was proposed for 1971. The proposal as outlined would allow each hunter 3 turkeys, only two of which could be taken in the fall season and only 1 of which could be a hen in counties west of the Blue Ridge. Since it would require modification of the tabs now issued with the big game license, it needs final approval nearly a year in advance of the season in which it is to take effect. Following the repeal of Pittsylvania’s special turkey season by the Legislature, the county was included with other eastern counties with a November 16 - December 20 gobblers only season. Raccoon season received sofhe major attention resulting in a September 1 - March 31 season in eastern counties previously having a continuous open season, and a November 2 through January 5 season for counties west of the Blue Ridge, coupled with a special weaponless dog training season to extend from October 1 through October 31 and include National Forests and state lands.
Squirrel seasons proliferated as proposals were made to grant Augusta and Stafford Counties October 1 - 14 seasons and Bedford County September 15 - October 14 dates. The early season in Greene County was dropped.
