During these months, forest wardens and volunteer flit departments were able to keep the average size of the fire small, with the exception of one fire in Orange County on April 10.
A high percentage of the District fires were caused by brush and trash burning. Other major causes were smoking and children playing with matches. Railroads are responsible for about 15 percent since burning carbon, hot metal from brakes, etc. cause fires on the railroad rights-of-way which often burn into the forests. The coming of summer with all its new greenery does not mean that the (Unger of forest fires has passed. A few dry days, warm temperatures, a tittle wind, and materials which normally burn rapidly can cause the forest warden serious trouble. Good judgment is necessary when burning at any time.
