Anglers who are bothered by'
the noise and bustle of the many | recreationists at most of the, state’s larger lakes might find the solitude and good fishing they seek at a nearby Game1 Commission Lake, suggests Fish Division Chief Jack Hoffman. ' Gasoline motors are not permitted and swimming is prohibited at all but two, leaving the lakes strictly for the quiet enjoyment of visiting anglers. A minimum 50 foot right-of-way around the lake makes it easy for those who like to sit on the bank with a cane pole and bobber. Intensive fish management techniques, including special creel and size limits, help these lakes to produce up to four times the quantity of fish per acre available in most larger impoundments. The Virginia Game Commission has 18 of these lakes now open to angling, including nearly every section of the state. They range in size from 37 to 218 acres with most offering bass and bluegill fishing. Scrappy < aannel cats have -been stocked iv many of these lakes, resluting ~i some fast and furious action during the hot summer months, when bass may get a little reluctant to strike. Muskellunge and northern pike have been stocked in several lakes, offering a good chance for a real trophy. No special permits other than a regular fishing license are required to fish in any of these lakes. All have adequate parking and most have a ramp suitable for launching small boats. Some eviert have bhat rental facilities, plus bait and food concessions. Fishing is permitted from one hour before sunrise until one hour after sunset, and most lakes are open for fishing the year around.
Two more of these lakes, 90 acre Rural Retreat Lake in Wythe County and a 78 acre lake on the Amelia Wildlife Management area, will probably be added to the fishing list in 1971. A 31 acre lake in Rockbridge County, now under construction, may also be completed in time to open then.
