Restore wool’s freshness with an occasional light sponging. Dip the sponge in cool water, squeeze until nearly dry, then go over the garment. Rinse the sponge frequently. Should a spot occur on an otherwise clean wool garment, treat it while it’s fresh. Often when the staining liquids are blotted immediately, a spot will be completely avoided. Stains allowed to set in any fabric will always be more difficult to remove. Depending on the nature of the stain, use a damp cloth dipped in a solution of mild soap and cool water, or a cleaning fluid. Avoid rubbing the soap as severe agitation will lock the wool fibers together giving a matted effect. On a light colored wool, use dry talcum powder to cover a grease spot, let stand overnight, and brush out the talcum.
With a little kindness, your wool garments will wear and last longer toward that goal of an attractive appearance.
