Since coming to the Senate five years ago, Harry F. Byrd, Jj'/, has proven that he is an active and effective legislator.
One of the most difficult things to do in the Senate is to amend legislation on the floor. Senator Byrd has introduced 17 floor amendments, and 13 of them have been adopted. Of the four that failed, one lost by a margin of one vote and another by two votes.
During his five years of service in the Senate, Byrd voted on 95 per cent of all Senate roll calls. When it comes time to stand up and be counted, Senator Byrd is there.
And during four of those years, Byrd presided over the Senate more than any other member of that body.
Byrd, at 55, is Virginia’s senior U.S. Senator. He served 18 years in .the Virginia State Senate before coming to Washington, so he has 23 years of legislative experience.
He served four years as Chairman of the Virginia Advisory Board on Economic Development, which played a major role in helping to create 180,000 jobs.
The Senator was born in Winchester. He studied at Virginia Military Institute and the University of . Virginia. During World War II, he was in the Pacific as executive officer of a Navy patrol bombing squadron.
He is a member of the Finance Committee and the Armed Services Committee of the Senate. He has made fact-finding trips for the Armed Services Committee to VietNam, the Middle East and Latin America. On his own, he has made on-the-spot studies of political and economic conditions in West Germany, Italy, Spain. Portugal, Yugoslavia and the Iron Curtain countries of Poland, Czechoslavokia and East Germany.
