Norton, Division Superintendent of Schools for Warren and Rappahannock Counties^ has announced plans for a Teachers’ Drug Education Workshop Course to be conducted during January and February. Forty-five selected teachers, principals and supervisors from the two counties will participate in three workshop sessions scheduled for Warren County High School on January 22, February 9, and February 20.
The school administration, Mr. Norton stated, is aware of the need for comprehensive training for teachers in the nature and prevention of drug experimentation and abuse by children and young people. Several principals and members of the administrative staff have participated in state-wide and regional workshops during the past six months. The next step in the local program is to educate a group of teachers and staff members who come in contact with those students, in Grades Six through Twelve, who may be tempted to engage in drug experimentation. Following the teacher education program, units of study will be introduced into the program of the schools at appropriate levels.
The Workshop participants will receive training in a wide variety of topics relating to drug use and abuse. These topics include “The Youth Sub-Culture,” “Use and Abuse of Legitimate and Prohibited Drugs?’ “State and Federal Drug Laws,” “Abuse of Household Chemicals,” and “Identification of Drug Abusers.”
