Part of Income
How big a part do government dollars-Federal, state and localplay in the financial affairs of Rappahannock County residents? How much of their personal income comes from these sources? Based upon a state-by-state analysis by the Tax Foundation of data recently released by the U. S. Office of Business Economics, about 34.5 percent of each dollar of income in Rappahannock County’s area is from public funds. It came to approximately $3,385,000, after taxes, in 1969. p Taken into account in the study were payments of wages and salaries to people on government payrolls, the amounts going to those receiving social security benefits and outlays for unemployment compensation, pensions, interest and public assistance. For Rappahannock County, applying the state average locally, the 34.5 cents consists of 26.2 cents received from the Federal government and 8.3 cents from s^ate and local agencies. ; Throughout the United States as a whole, 21.7 cents of every dollar ol personal income received by Americans comes in the form of gbvernment checks, the Tax Foundation shows. In the Southeast States the average is 25.2 cents. The total amount obtained from governmental sources during the year, via payrolls, pensions and the like, added up to $161 billion.
Of this sum, over $93 billion came from Washington and the other $68 billbion from state and local governments.
Some communities get an exexceptionally high proportion of their income from these sources, it is noted, due to a greater amount of public employment in their area or due to a high concentration of retired people.
The ratio of government payments to personal income was highest, 49.2 percent, in the District of Columbia, because of the many Federal employees ..there. Alaska, with 45.7 percent, was next.
State and local contributions to personal income were lowest in New Hampshire, 7.1 percent, and highest in New Mexico, 13.4 per cent.
With government payrolls on the rise and social security and other benefits expanding, public funds are becoming an everincreasing source of personal income. ;
