What Crop for
Silage This Year?
Blacksburg - Virginia livestock owners might have to decide upon what crop to use for silage this year to take the place of corn which could fail because of Southern Corn Leaf Blight (SLB). Virginia escaped with relatively light losses to the 1970 outbreak of a new strain of SLB. It came too late to seriously affect the almost mature corn crop. But now, the fungus is here. Indications are tha);. it is Overwintering. to infect‘the 1971 croft early.
According to Harlan E. White, Virginia Tech associate professor of agronomy, the best defense against SLB is the use of resistant varieties. “But there almost certainly will not be enough seed of resistant varieties to plant the entire state corn crop,” the extension specialist in forage crops warned.
