Spring Forest Fires

The Division of Forestry reports that 283 forest fires burned 2,405 acres of forest land in the 16county Northern Piedmont District to date for this year. In Rappahannock County, 10 fires have burned 6 acres of forest land. Last year, the first five months showed a total of 173 fires, and these fires burned 813 forested acres in the Northern Piedmont area.
This year the fire danger wa; moderate during most o! February and March but sever* conditions developed for a few days in April. During these months, forest wardens and volunteer fire departments were abale to keep the average size of the fire small, with the exception of three fires which occurred in Nelson County, Louisa County, and one was on the OrangeAlbemarle County line. A high percentage of the District fires were caused by brush and trash burning. Other major causes were smoking and children playing with matches. Railroads are responsible for about 15%. The coming of summer with all its new greenery does not mean that the danger of forest fires has passed. A few dry days, warm temperatures, a little wind, and materials which normally burn rapidly can cause the fores warden serious trouble. Good judgment is necessary when burning at any time.
