Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Brown and Mrs. Beulah Armen trout of Front Royal were Wednesday overnight guests of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Wayland. On Thursday they visited relatives in Culpeper. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Smith and son Jerry of Luray were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Clark and Misty Hitt. Their Friday night guests were Mr. and Mrs. Victor Taylor, Aiughters Penny and Robin of Cweper. Mrs. Ertha Hawkins of Boston was a Wednesday overnight guest of her sister, Mrs. Amos Butler. On Thursday they visited their brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Aylor in Madison. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Butler and family of McLean were weekend guests of Mr. Butler’s mother, Mrs. Amos Butler. C. B. Johnson remains a patient in Culpeper Memorial Hospital where Mrs. Johnson visits him daily.

The increased use of meat, a comparatively expensive item in the diet, is an indication that people are living better than they did a decade ago, according to the economists. Their incomes rose faster than the cost of goods and services over the 10-year stretch, even though there was little or no spread during the last year or two.
With the change in eating habits, the Rappahannock County population is now consuming an estimated 440 tons of meat and 300 tons of potatoes a year.
As for other basic foods consumed,by Americans, the survey shows thatthey are drinking milk and cream at the annual rate of 272 pounds per person and eating eggs at the rate of 316 per person, equivalent to about 6 per week.
Just how well the average Rappahannock County worker is making out depends upon how far his pay envelope goes in today’s market place.
Can he buy more with his weekly wage than before? How many hours of work must he put in to buy a pair of shoes or a vacuum cleaner?
To pay for a representative group of foods and services comprising, for example, three dozen eggs, five pounds of potatoes, three pounds of round steak, a house visit by a physician and a man’s wool suit now involves some 43.7 hours of time on the job for the average worker in the local area.
