Merit Sch’p. Test
A letter of Commendatior honoring him for his high per formance on the 1971 National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Tesl (NMSQT) has been awarded a student at Rappahannock Count) High School, Principal Dennis B Wingfield has announced. The student was William I Kilby, son of Mr. and Mrs. I. R Kilby of Sperryville.
He was among 35,000 students ir the United States who scored ir the upper 2 percent of those whc are expected to graduate froir high school in 1972. The Com mended students rank just below the 15,000 Semifinalists announcer in September by the Nationa Merit Scholarship Corporatioi 1 (NMSC).
Edward C. Smith, president o NMSC, said: “Although Com ! mended students advance m further in the Merit Scholarshi] competition, their standing in thi; nationwide program deserve: public recognition. Their higl performance on the NMSQT give: promise of continued success ii college.
“The Commended student! should be encouraged to pursu< their education since their in tellectual talent represents ar important and much needec natural resource. Both thes< students and our nation wil benefit from their continuing educational development.” The Commended students names are reported to certair scholarship-granting agencies anc to the colleges they named as theii first and second choices when the) took the NMSQT in February 1971 The reports include home ad dresses, test scores, and an ticipated college major and careei intentions of the Commended students. NMSC encourages these students to make every effort tc continue their education.
