Lois Jean Compton, 16, of Castleton succumbed of gunshot wounds at Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal on Christmas Day.
The shooting — which was termed accidental by retiring Sheriff Charles K. Estes, aft^r an investigation — occurred at the Compton home at Laurel Mills.
She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Emerson (Jack) Compton.
The accident took place when her cousin, Robert William Compton, 18, attempted to show her the new 22 calibre rifle which he had received as - a Christmas gift.
He had taken the magazine from the gun but failed to realize there was a bullet in the chamber.
The gun discharged.: and the bullet entered the upper left section of her abdomen causing extensive internal hemorraging, said the officer. □
