ROBERT GAMBLE, the Washington advertising man and ski resort entrepreneur, was on the phone early last Thursday. “We made snow last night and our first customers are coming in this afternoon!” he shouted. Balmy, warm weather has been Gamble’s curse this fall and winter, and he couldn’t have been happier over the cold snap. The first customers were from Grafton School at Berryville, and top skiier Reuben T. Palmer, Mrs. Palmer and a large part of the skiing staff were on hand to give the youngsters a start in a downhill world.
And they had a ball. It was cold again Friday night and some more snow was manufactured, but then it rained. And. by Monday and Tuesday the temperatures were up around 60 degrees again.
And nobody would have blamed Gamble if he d gone looking for some Florida resort to shift his investment to. □
