an extra rejoinder for motorists leaving multi-lane highways, such as the interstate system, and entering two-lane roads that oncoming traffic will be in the adjacent lane, Mills explained.
“In other words, if the lane line is dashed yellow, it’s a two-lane road and if the line is dashed white, it’s a multi-lane roadway,” he said.
Mills added that serious accidents have occurred in the past as a direct result of drivers mistakenly thinking they were on a multi-lane divided highway when in. fact they were traveling on a two-lane facility. The change in line color is intended «to add a new precaution against such accidents, he explained.
The change already has been made on a few miles of highway at scattered locations in Virginia, but during 1972 the Department of Highways will make the complete changeover as part of its annual program of restoring worn pavement markings, Mills said. □
