tions, a career with its origin in a one-room school at Five Forks near Woodville and its termination June 6 in the 30room consolidated Rappahannock County Elementary School. She taught a total of 44-1/2 years, most of which took place in Rappahannock County with the exception of the six years that she was employed in Warren County. Enrolled in her class the past session was the grandson of one of her first pupils.

Miss Riley, a native of Amissville, received her education there and was graduated from the high school at Amissville. She attended Madison College, Harrisonburg, for a year and received a certificate which qualified her to teach at the tender age of 18. During her high school years one of her principals was Ira Partlow, father of film actress Shirley Maclaine and actor Warren Beatty, and one the late H.B. Winfrey of Woodville.

In her first assignment at Five Forks, Miss Riley taught seven grades and received a salary of $60 per month. After a year there, she went to Warren County and taught two years at Bentonville, boarding in the community for in those days the trip from Bentonville to Amissville was a
