WE ARE PLEASED to add our well-wishes to the four teachers who are retiring after an accumulative teaching record which is truly impressive.
Miss Garland Riley, Mrs. Annie Cooke, Mrs. Frances Lyne and Mrs. Jewelle Magarityarenow free to enjoy well-earned years of rest, relaxation, travel and — if we correctly judge their vitality — a lively and continuing interest in their community and the world around them.
Well-wishes from even the oldest of friends cannot begin to match, however, the warm knowledge these women have. It’s hard to think of a more satisfying professional life than one devoted to helping children get started on the right foot in life, helping them acquire the education they will need to become citizens, parents and perhaps teachers themselves, in later life.
For all the fancy educational theories — and sometimes it seems like the theories come and go like the tides — there’s still no substitute for a good teacher. Everyone of us remembers one or two (more, if we were especially lucky) outstanding teachers, who inspired us to greater effort, or instilled in us a deeper love of knowledge, or broadened our horizons.
School children and parents of Rappahannock have been fortunate to have had the likes of teachers such as Miss Riley, Mrs. Cooke, Mrs. Lyne and Mrs. Magarity. □
