DESPITE THE LONG DRAWN OUT cold spring most of the vegetable gardens around the county look surprisingly good. Outside of a bumper crop of flea ■* beetles and the normal amount of cabbage worms, potato bugs , and asparagus beetle, most gardens have been fairly free of insects and diseases.
As the growing season progresses so will the insect and disease problems. Many of the disease problems can be prevented by growing disease resistant varieties and using good cultural practices. And in many instances several applications of Sevin (Carbaryl) will do a satisfactory job of controlling insect pests. In fact Sevin is probably the best all purpose insecticide for the home garden. (Make application in late afternoon to prevent bee kill).
Occasionally aphids or mites may become a problem. When this occurs, Sevin is not effective, so switch to Malathion for aphid control and Kelthane for mite control. Maneb or Zineb will help control most diseases such as late or early blight, antracnose, leaf spot and mildew.
All of these recommended pesticides are relatively safe when used according to directions. Resist the temptation many gardeners have to over spray. They reason that if one tablespoon per gallon is recommended, two or three tablespooons will be more effective. This isn’t the case and may result in harmful residues or plant injury.
