LIEUTENANT GENERAL Hugh M. Exton of Amissville has retired from the United States Army after 37 years of service. A special retirement review was held May 31 at Fort Myer in his honor.
Gen. Exton, a native of Salt Lake City, Utah, was graduated from the U. S. Military Academy in 1935 and commissioned a second lieutenant of Field Artillery. He has served as instructor to the Philippine Army, as Aide to the Third Corps Commanding General and as a Division Artillery Executive Officer.
During World War II he served in the European Theatre, seeing combat in North Africa, Sicily and Europe. In 1944 he returned to Washington to be a staff officer in War Department, and a year later became Military Aide to the Secretary of War.
He became an instructor at the Command and General Staff College, Leavenworth, Kan. and later was Chief of the Training Branch European Command, Heidelberg, Germany. His next appointment was that of Director of the Department of Military Psychology and Leadership at the U. S. Military Academy.
