33 have constituted service in Rappahannock. Mrs. Cooke, nee Atkins, was born and reared near Sperryville and received her early education there. She spend a year at Madison College, Harrisonburg, to obtain her initial teaching certificate, andover the ensuing years completed her requirements at Madison for a B.S. degree in professional education.
She had done graduate work from the University of Virginia and George Peabody College, Nashville. Her residential graduate work was done at Radford College.
As a primary teacher, Mrs. Cooke began her teaching career in 1926 at the Hazel Mountain School near Sperryville. She recalls teaching there at the time of the Woodville tornado and of the difficult time she had crossing a swollen mountain stream as she rode* home horseback that day.
She taught primary classes at Amissville School for a year then served 12 more years as head teacher there. Other assignments include a year at Sperryville Elementary and six years as principal of the Flint Hill Elementary unit, then five years as principal at Washington Elementary before the consolidated county school was formed.
Mrs. Cooke taught five years in Warren County and served three years in elementary education in Fauquier County. She was an instructor of a fifth grade class at the time of her retirement.
Presently she has no specific plans except to take it easy for a while with maybe a little traveling in the future.
